During the 20th century, Hollywood heroine became a well-established archetype, many popular films depicting female characters in distress, whether innocent or guilty. Conventional princesses — Snow White, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty — are found to be ordinary, or "lowly", employees with whom the male hero must join forces to survive in a male world. Similarly, characters of other strong ethnic or religious affiliations have become established types, even in the West, for example, the Roman Catholic or Judaeo-Christian heroines. Disney films, as seen in the aforementioned reviews, have performed a similar role, selectively and largely — it seems — to placate the company's many female fans, including a sizable segment of parents, many of whom are mothers as well as daughters. This has perhaps been a related factor in the actress Halle Berry becoming a favorite in the "Princess" series, and the actress Angelina Jolie a favorite in Disney's Maleficent. Characters such as Princess Aurora, Pocahontas, Pocahontas' mother and Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm are imbued with a "softness" and racial content, as well as an "innocence."
Nonetheless, the fact is that the recent narrative films starring Halle Berry and Angelina Jolie, the Disney cartoon films and many other movies in this category have not redefined the classical heroine, a fact not lost on the scientific community. In the book-length study extit{Born Liars: Why Women Lie, What You Can Do About It,"} (first published in 1998 and republished in 2003), Martin and Women Lie on Conscience [quoting Elsa Moravec, "Why Women Lie” (1999) pg. 9] describe these and other studies in the field of women's intuitive lie-detection and their significance:
[e]fforts have been made over the past 15 years to expand upon this research [Liars studies] and to study whether women have any intuitive ability to recognize (and react with disgust to) liars. Despite the fact that this research was conducted in a laboratory setting, it was shown that human beings have this ability. This research used the method of viewing videotaped interviews of confederate males confabulating crimes and lying. d2c66b5586
